Important Update for Security Guard Training Requirements
Effective January 1, 2025, new regulations will require Security Guard applicants in Maryland to complete a minimum of 12 hours of basic training. This training will cover 17 mandated objectives approved by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission.
Additionally, all Security Guard renewals completed after this date must include proof of 8 hours of in-service training. We are offering a training program for current and prospective security guards at our Essex location that is compliant with state requirements and has been pre-approved by the Certification Unit of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
Prospective Security Guards
Prospective security guards are required to complete 12 hours of in-class training. We offer security guard licensing classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9:30 am – 3 pm.

Security Guard Licensing Renewals
Security guards renewal applications must include proof of 8 hours of in-service training. We offer security guard renewal licensing classes on Thursdays 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

SECURITY GUARD TRAINING OBJECTIVES
Below are the key training objectives approved by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission to ensure Security Guards are prepared to meet professional standards:
Certification Requirements
- Identify the requirements for obtaining and maintaining security guard certification in Maryland.
- Recognize the limitations to receiving and maintaining certification.
Legal Knowledge
- Analyze scenarios to identify elements of a crime using Maryland’s Annotated Code or the Digest of Criminal Laws.
- Understand the legal limits of authority for arrest and detention.
Use of Force
- Define what constitutes use of force and its authorized and prohibited applications.
- Learn reporting requirements and legal ramifications for the use of force.
De-escalation Techniques
- Define de-escalation and utilize time, distance, and cover to defuse situations.
- Leverage communication as a critical tool for de-escalating conflicts.
Weapons Handling
- Understand the limitations and requirements for carrying weapons as a security guard.
Engaging with Vulnerable Individuals
- Employ appropriate techniques when encountering:
- Individuals in crisis
- Individuals with disabilities
- Juveniles
- Individuals with behavioral health concerns
- Employ appropriate techniques when encountering:
Crisis Management and Aid
- Learn methods to assist individuals in need and seek appropriate aid.
These objectives ensure that Security Guards in Maryland are equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties responsibly and professionally.
